Title
John Sheirman, Nottingham, to Col Sanders at his lodging at the Sugar Loaf, 2 doors from Mr Gains grocer, by Westminster Gate
Date
21 Apr 1660
Description
'I send you the enclosed muster rolls - Captain Lockyer who was lately sent to London to his Excellency returned back today, and passing through the town enticed away several soldiers of Captain Cradock's troop - the townsmen took an alarum and drew out 300 men well-armed - I commanded my troop and Captain Cradock's to mount and drew forth at the bridge end - my whole troop declared their resolution to obey me and be faithful to Lord Gen Monck and obedient to Parliament - upon my offering to stop Lockyer and Everard Captain Cradock's whole troop revolted from me and declared they would go to their Captain about Okeham (Oakham, Rutland) - the quartermaster prevailed on 12 of them to return to obedience and I prevailed on 12 more - marching with a small party after Lockyer, I commanded him to stand and submit to the present authority - I was overpowered and had enough to do to tureturn - I have good grounds to believe that agitators and Lambert's agents are all over England privately creeping among us - I believe a general rising is intended - pray command Lt Monck to speedily away from London to his charge here - Lt Lassells and Quartermaster Watts are faithful persons and good officers - I am not well at present being exceedingly weary - I shall be very vigilant and careful to observe all orders from his Excellency - I hear Col Hacker and Captain Doughty are secured at Leicester '
