TitleNathaniel Barton, Tutbury, to Col Thomas Sanders at his lodging at Mrs Grinsele's, the Sugar Loaf, King Street, near St Margaret's church, Westminster
Date20 Apr 1660
Description'of the 3 letters you mention I have received but one - I am informed by Lt Coates that the treasurer at Coventry will not pay out that month's pay without deduction of the £260that was paid by your and Colonel Harker's orders, unless you permit him a discharge to the treasury which I desire you speedily to do - there is scarce any money in the Derby treasury and the treasurer can get in none without considerable parties of horsepeople refuse to pay because the act came out of the Rump - the collectors are backward to distain and the soldiers have not the power to take free quarters until they pay - it would be needful that you procure an order either from his Excellency (Monck) or the Committee of the Army to quicken the commissioners - I could not go to Ireton myself today as my horses were appointed to go forth about the disposal of my children but I have sent an effectual direction to Mr Frost to find the receipt in your desk - it would not remiss for you to endeavour to procure a new one from Guildhall - the sum of warrant must be £1899-11-4d as it was a fortnight's pay on January musters and a fortnight's pay on account in Feb - Lt Coates brought me a letter directed to yourself from the Guildhall approving of the dismissal of some for refusing to subscribe the address but I suppose it is a mistake - I desire you by the next post, to signify your direction about an address in your regiment - I have instructed the troops to send up their muster rolls by this post and I think it advisable to procure the warrant charged not on Derbyshire but on Leicestershire, Warwickshire or Staffordshire - tell Mrs Aske that the £3 I mentioned was paid by her in Derby but I never remember receiving £3 from you on her behalf - Mr Taylor died January 1655/6'.
