Administrative HistoryIn 1858, two brothers named Small, purchased a small pit in the village of Stanley, near Ilkeston. They sank a shaft and erected a pump house, and by 1870 coal was being mined on the site. The 1881 census shows several people living on Long Row and Short Row were working at the Stanley Kilburn Colliery. The Stanley Kilburn Colliery Company went bankrupt in 1885.
