Description | Documents accumulated by Anthony Stone of Derby (1834-1902) with three documents relating to the estates of Anthony Stone, his wife Ann and their son Arthur Richard. Most of the documents concern an inheritance dispute over the estate of William Tatlow born at Bentley House, Longford in 1727. Documents in the collection indicate that only one descendant of William Tatlow's half-siblings, (children of his mother's marriage to Thomas Swindell), received an inheritance: this was James Sutton (1767-1830) of Shardlow Hall. Anthony Stone and others later made enquiries about their entitlement. In 1863 Anthony Stone gave evidence to magistrates at Ashbourne when James Clifford (1787-1866) was charged with having, some sixty years earlier, on behalf of James Sutton, torn out the page from the Longford parish register on which the baptism of William Tatlow had been recorded. The charge was later rejected at Derby Assizes.
Other documents include an agreement for the purchase of a warp lace machine and a Chelsea pensioner certificate. Three letters written by Adrian Bennett, originally of Derby (1830-1918) to his sister Felicia, (first wife of Anthony Stone) include one written from the Crimea where Adrian Bennett was on active military service during the Crimean War |
