Notes
The Gold Coast was colonised by a number of European nations, profiting from the trade in gold and enslaved people. In 1874, the British Gold Coast was established. The Ghana Independence Act of 1957 amalgamated the Gold Coast, Ashanti, the Northern Territories, and British Togoland as Ghana. The country became independent in 1960.
