Notes | Burbage was established as new ecclesiastical parish in 1869 (formed from the parish of Hartington Middle Quarter). It did become a civil parish in 1894 but later transferred to the unparished borough of Buxton.
Extract from Kenneth Cameron (1959) 'The Place Names of Derbyshire', p. 52: "The traditional explanation of the name is that given by Thomas Hobbes in 'De Mirabilibus Pecci' (1636) and by Charles Cotton in 'The Wonders of the Peak' (1681) of an outlaw named 'Poole' who made his dwelling there. There is no documentary evidence to support the tradition". |
