History | Stanley Colliery was sunk in 1903 near West Hallam. It was also known as Nibby Pit. The No. 2 Shaft was known as Stanley Hillside. Later surface drifts were added in 1936. During its lifetime, the Kilburn, Low Main, Piper and Stanley coal seams were worked. The colliery was transferred to the National Coal Board in 1947 following the nationalisation of the coal industry. It became part of the East Midlands Division Area No. 5. The highest recorded manpower was 596 in 1949, with the highest recorded output being 287,383 tonnes in 1956. The colliery was closed in July 1961. |
