HistoryHe was apprenticed as a sculptor to Sir Henry Cheere and continued in that trade until c.1750, when he became an architect instead. He enjoyed great success as an architect, mainly with newly wealthy clients. He was involved with a dozen punblis buildings, fifty country houses and a large number of town houses, gaining a reputation as an extremely hard worker. he was knighted in 1872.
