| History | He started planning for the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic expedition in 1953 to cross the Antarctic with a full scientific programme to run alongside it. In November 1955 an advance party set up base and made preparations for the arrival of Fuch and his party in February 1957. On 24 November the main crossing party set off, with support from a team led by Sir Edmund Hillary, and completd the crossing 99 laters on 2 March 1958, being the first to cross the continent. |
