Two brass spurs worn by Thomas Gell at the Battle of Albuera in the Peninsular War

Description
The Battle of Albuera took place on 16 May 1811 as part of the Peninsular War. On one side were the British, Spanish and Portuguese troops, and on the other was the French Armee du Midi, The French finally withdrew, after heavy losses on both sides.

Gell family of Hopton Hall, Wirksworth
Administrative History
Major Thomas Gell (1788-1865) was the son of Philip and Elizabeth Gell of Wirksworth in Derbyshire. During the Peninsular War he served with the 29th Regiment of Foot and was a Captain at the time of the Battle of Albuera, which took place on 6 May 1811. He later served during the American War of 1812 where he was promoted to Major, being severely wounded when the USS Adams ran aground in 1814. At the end of his military career he returned to Derbyshire and lived at Spondon, near Derby.
