| Administrative History | Louisa Sellwood later Turner (1816-1879) was the daughter of lawyer Henry Sellwood and his wife Sarah (nee Franklin), as well as the niece of Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin and cousin of Eleanor Isabella Franklin, later Gell. Louisa married on 24 May 1836 the Reverend Charles Tennyson Turner, the brother of the poet Alfred Tennyson, who later married Louisa's sister Emily. Unfortunately, Louisa suffered from mental ill health shortly after her marriage, and the couple separated in 1839. They were, however, reunited in 1849 and resumed their marital life in Grasby, Lincolnshire, of which he was Vicar. Although born with the surname Tennyson, in 1835 Charles took the surname Turner, after he had inherited the property of his great-uncle, Reverend Samuel Turner. |
