Administrative History | Jerome Edward Percival (30 September 1916 – 23 April 2006) and Sheila Patricia Minton (9 August 1917 – September 1992) married at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Derby on the 25 September 1947.
Jerome Edward Percival worked for Derby Borough Treasurer’s Department from 1933-1939 and 1946-1977. In 1965 he was recorded as a Chartered Municipal Treasurer. Jerome joined the Royal Army Pay Corps in September 1939. He transferred to the Royal Army Service Corps in November 1940, to a Driver Training Battalion in Sheffield. In December 1941 he sailed to India, spending a few days around Christmas in Durban, South Africa, before landing in Bombay (now known as Mumbai) in January 1942. Jerome formally left the army in August 1946.
He was a member of the Holy Family Church, Allestree, and a Knight of St Columba. He attended St Mary’s School, Edward Street, Derby, then Bemrose School. He was vice-president of the Derby branch of the International Friendship League.
Jerome and Shelia had two daughters.
Jerome was the son of John Edward Percival (20 July 1874 – 2 May 1954) and Margaret Percival (nee McNamara 10 June 1878 – 5 April 1965). John Edward Percival was born in Derby and worked for various local building firms as a joiner and was well known as an amateur musician. Before he retired in 1939, he worked for ten years for Derby Co-Operative Society Ltd. He married Margaret in 1905, who had been born at Mount Shannon, County Claire, Ireland, before coming to Derby as a baby. They had five living children, of whom Jerome Percival was the youngest.
Sheila Patricia Percival (nee Minton) was the daughter of Henry Laurence Minton (30 May 1888- 1 December 1972) and Anastasia Minton's (nee Murphy 12 December 1885- 10 April 1962).
Henry Laurence Minton was born in Hawley, Stoke-on-Trent, and was orphaned at 14. He walked to Derby from Rugely, Staffordshire to get a job as a cleaner for Great Northern Railway (GNR) at the Loco shed on Slack Lane, Derby. He served an apprenticeship and became a driver with the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) after twenty years as a Fireman (Locomotive Engineer). He was active in the Derby branch of National Union of Railwaymen for forty-seven years and served on the railways for 51 years.
Anastasia Minton (nee Murphy). She was the youngest of 10 children, of which only the last two were born in England. Her parents were Jeremiah Murphy and Mary Murphy (nee Elms). The family originally came from New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland and moved to Derby to work at the ‘Skin Yard’ Slack Lane, Derby. |
