Administrative History | John Radford (1746-1834) was the son of John Radford of Stanley Hall and Rachel Hieron of Little Eaton (Rachel was the niece of Elizabeth and William Richardson of Smalley, through her mother Martha). John Radford married Theophilia Vaughan in 1776 and together they had twelve children. They moved to Smalley Hall in 1784 following John's appointment as High Sheriff of Derbyshire. Their eldest son, John (1778-1866) and his son Arthur (1848-1928), ultimately inherited much of the estate. Arthur, later of Bradfield Hall, Berkshire, sold Smalley Hall in 1902.
Their other children included: - Thomas (1783-1872) a Cotton Mill owner, who married Isabella Wilson, heiress of Carnfield Hall, in 1829 - Edward (1788-1872) appears to have inherited estates at Tideswell, Hucklow and Haddon, as well as Newton Burgoland, Leicestershire. He married Eliza Diane Childers and they primarily lived at Tansley Wood. They had three children: Anna Eliza (married Edward Thompson), Selena (married John Wallbank Childers) and Childers Charles (1828-1896). Childers inherited his father's estates and they passed to his widow Mary Elizabeth, nee Hurt, until her death in 1912, when they were to distributed between the surviving children of Anna Eliza Thompson. - Henry (1791-1883), who became a solicitor in Atherstone, Warwickshire |
