Title
Nellie Kirkham correspondence with Doug Nash
Date
1957-1958
Description
Although taken from an original folder marked "Miss Nellie Kirkham 1958", the contents date from 1957 and 1958. The correspondence is exclusively between Nash and Kirkham, and largely concerns the publishing of information on lead mining history. In some of her letters, Kirkham cites references to her notes, as in her letter of 1 Jun 1957 where she refers to "Extracts from my notes (refs XXXVIII N E A 10 (4) and Miscellaneous (5u23))". Some of the notes using this reference system have survived in the papers of Nellie Kirkham, series D5675/2.
In his letter to Nellie Kirkham of 16 Jan 1957, Doug Nash describes his "new file system for 1957/8", which seems likely to have been a factor in the original order of the files in this series: "Before letters are completely filed away at the year's end (bi-annually) I go through them and type any information into a special book, being Volume 8 'Excerpts from letters'". No such volumes have yet been transferred to Derbyshire Record Office, but it is possible that they remain in private hands.
