Administrative HistoryThe original St Elphin's School was founded in Warrington, Cheshire, in 1844, for the education of daughters of the clergy. In 1904, the school moved to Darley Dale, Matlock, but its list of patrons continued to include the holders of ecclesiastical offices close to Warrington. During the period when these records were created, patrons included the bishops of Chester, Blackburn, Manchester, Liverpool and Derby. These management papers refer to St Elphin's and the Clergy Widows' and Orphans' Fund collectively as "The Warrington Institutions"
