Description
This sub-series consists of radio play scripts written or adapted by Lawrence du Garde Peach for the BBC programme Children’s Hour. Peach was a prolific contributor to the programme, creating educational historical dramas intended for a young audience.
The scripts cover a range of themes and historical periods and are grouped into smaller thematic sub-sub-series, including:
1. Famous Historical Figures – Biographical plays about individuals such as Abraham Lincoln, Dr Johnson and Booker T. Washington.
2. Tales of the Tower of London – Plays relating to episodes associated with the Tower of London, such as the escape of Lord Nithsdale and the last voyage of Sir Walter Raleigh.
3. Radio Plays for Children – Standalone and thematic plays, including dramatisations of historical events, castle histories and British figures such as George Stephenson and Garibaldi.
4. Famous Men and Women of England – Biographical scripts featuring figures including Queen Elizabeth I, Captain Cook, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.
Most items are typed scripts, some with manuscript amendments or annotations indicating revisions for performance or reuse. Several items exist in variant forms, including altered endings or editorial notes.
