Title
William Gilbert Endowed School, Duffield
Date
1854-1993
Description
Duffield Endowed (Free) School for boys was built from land left by William Gilbert in 1565. It was later rebuilt in 1869 and further enlarged in 1907, before being retitled as a Junior School in 1955. An affiliated school for girls in Duffield was founded in the 19th century, and the surviving records are within this collection because the schools merged in 1956 when junior girls joined the junior boys. The old girl's school continued as an infants' department.
