| Administrative History | Several charities were set up to provide assistance to the poor of Peak Forest in various ways. The individual charities were mostly set up by wills under the names of the following: Nicholas Green, John Vernon, Humphrey Wilshaw, Jeremiah Ward, Samuel Frith, John Badily Radcliffe, John Frith and Robert Needham. For information on the the establishment of each individual charity, see the Further Reports of the Commissioners for Inquiring concerning Charities, 1819-1837, pages 631-633.
By the beginning of the 20th century, there were three set days when money or bread was distributed to the poor, namely St Thomas's Day (21 December), New Year's Day and Valentine's Day (14 February). Help was also given to those who who were apprenticed out at any time of the year. The Trustees were also responsible for distributing the money coming out of the funds of the Devonshire Charities with regard to Peak Forest.
