Administrative History | Ilkeston Borough Council was incorporated by a charter dated 31 Jan 1887. The Borough Council had responsibility for approving new buildings and alterations and improvements to existing buildings. Plans of proposed works were lodged with the Council and recorded in building plan registers. The registers are annotated with details of the applicant and whether the scheme was approved. |
Custodial History | These records were transferred to Derbyshire Record Office in December 2001.
Further files were received in April 2017 from a private individual via Erewash Museum in April 2017 (see D5624/UL). The records had originally been disposed of by Derbyshire Record Office as the sampling procedure adopted resulted in the retention of the application files for the census years only (i.e. 1971, 1961, 1951, etc.). Of the approximately 130 files received only the most significant applications were retained as the original building plan registers for the period covered by the plans do survive and can be consulted to identify details of other applications made by the Stanton Ironworks Company. To aid researchers studying the Stanton Ironworks sites a list of the other plans (which presumably represents most if not all of the company's planning applications between 1936 and 1970, a list of the application references has been added to the catalogue. These records were donated with a small number of other records relating to the Stanton Ironworks, which were accessioned to collection D3808. |
