British Railways Board (1963-2001)
Administrative History
The British Railways Board was established in 1963 following the Transport Act 1962, inheriting the responsibilities of the British Transport Commission that was dissolved at the same time. The Board was responsible for most railway services in England, Scotland Wales until privatisation of the industry in 1997. It was abolished in 2001 with the majority of its functions transferred to the Strategic Rail Authority's subsidiary BRB (Residuary) Limited.
Custodial History
Records in this collection were first to the Derbyshire Record Office by the British Railways Board Record Centre in October 2000 and May 2001. Further records were donated by the author of a website devoted to canal maps (www.canalmaps.net) in September 2022, having been collected for research into canals.
