Administrative History | John Joseph Briggs (1819-1876) was a notable antiquarian, poet and naturalist. He was born at King's Newton, in Melbourne. Briggs attended schools at Wymeswold (Leicestershire) and Darley, and was apprenticed to W Bemrose and Sons, printers of Derby. As a result of ill-health, however, he did not complete his apprenticeship and he returned to King's Newton to assist his parents run their farm. Briggs was a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. |
