Description
The County Club, Derby was a "gentleman's club" founded in July 1878 with the object of the club to be "the association in a social club of gentlemen resident mainly within the County and City of Derby". The Duke of Devonshire was one of the founding members, along with most notable families of Derbyshire. The first Clubhouse was purchased on The Wardwick, Derby. The club moved to another premises on the same street in the 1920s. In 1924, a company The County Club (Derby) Ltd was incorporated to manage the club's activities. This company was dissolved in 1998.
In 1963, the clubhouse on The Wardwick was sold to Derby Council. The club moved to 51 Ashbourne Road. In 1996, this building was sold. It was difficult to decide how to divide the proceeds of sale. The club became a dining/luncheon club.
Over its existence, the club made recipocal arrangements with other similar clubs, provided a clubhouse for use of its members, arranged many events, and participated in local social occasions. A notable event occurred in 1879 when club member the 20th Earl of Shrewsbury eloped with fellow member Alfred Edward Miller Mundy's wife, Ellen. An EGM was called to discuss his expulsion from the club, for which the Earl instructed lawyers to argue his case.
