Administrative HistoryLocal Boards of Health were set up in 1848 to administer services which related to public health, such as improved sewerage and water supply, street cleaning, maintenance of highways and supervision of building regulations. Under the Public Health Act 1872, Local Boards of Health were designated Urban Sanitary Authorities and under the Local Government Act 1894 they became Urban District Councils.
