Title
The Derbyshire Printing Company Ltd, newspaper proprietors and printers, of Buxton
Date
1909-1933
Description
The Derbyshire Printing Company Ltd was established in 1909 in order to purchase the newspaper publishing and printing business of C F Wardley in Buxton. Mr Wardley owned the High Peak News, the Buxton Advertiser and the Matlock Guardian, later known as the Matlock Visitor. The Company's largest shareholder was the Duke of Devonshire, formerly the Unionist MP for West Derbyshire. According to the Secretary, Herbert Brooke Taylor, in a report dated Sep 1913 [D504/53/9/1], the principal purpose of the acquisition of the newspapers was 'to make use of them primarily for Party purposes...it was hoped to bring into the Company the Unionist leaders in the two Constituencies of West Derbyshire and High Peak'. The papers in this collection are largely concerned with the running of the papers as general news concerns, but documents relating to their circulation and to legal cases involving the Liberal agent Charles F White shed light on the political aspect of their existence.
