Title
Brittlebank Family of Winster
Date
1497-1891
Description
William Brittlebank, senior was born at Wirksworth in 1765, the son of Francis Brittlebank of Alstonefield, Staffordshire. At an early age he was taken into the law practice of George Goodwin as an errand boy. On 14 July 1791, William was admitted to the rolls of the Gentlemen Practicers. He married Mary Andrews and set up a solicitor's practice at his home, 'Oddo House' at Winster. Future generations also practised at 'Oddo' creating a unique residency of lawyers for nearly 100 years, until the house was destroyed by fire at the end of the nineteenth century. Most of the family papers were also lost in the fire.
Several of William's sons, especially William jnr, Andrew, Thomas, and Benjamin, entered the law profession.
Andrew (1792-1846) had many business interests and owned shares in lead mines and a railway company. Andrew married Esther Palfreyman at High Sheen on 23 March 1825. His son, Andrew jnr. attended Cheltenham College in the 1850s. Andrew snr died in 1846.
Upon the death of his grandfather, William snr, Andrew Thomas was bequeathed £10,000. He continued the law practice, but for a short while gave it up in favour of becoming a farmer at Bala, north Wales. He married Sarah Ellen Lease at South Darley. They had three sons. The first, Louis Oswald at Bala in 1861, then Charles Clifton in 1863 and Thomas Andrew in 1865.
The family emigrated to Queensland in 1875 and settled at Mount Gravat, now a suburb of Brisbane. (Andrew Brittlebank: Additional Notes by R. Collinson)
The Buxton Gas Works was established in 1850.
