Title
Letters sent to Norman Norton by Elsy Hall, later Elsy Norton, until Norman was demobbed in 1946.
Date
1942-1946
Description
Elsy Hall lived in Vernon Street, Derby. Norman's family lived in Bloxwich, Staffordshire but Norman was stationed in various parts of the country before being sent to Norway in 1945. He and Elsy met while Norman was stationed in Derby in 1941and married in August 1942. During the 1939-1945 war Elsy worked for Trent Buses in Derby as a conductress.
The letters include references to Elsy's wartime work, attitudes to the war, difficulties of travelling and rationing, family matters, preparations for the wedding and plans for the future, as well personal thoughts. Norman wrote two or three times a week and Elsy wrote less often.
In many cases the letters can only dated to month and year by the postmark on the envelope.
