Using statistics relating to Renfrewshire to illustrate, the paper seeks to quantify the financial benefits to be obtained by supporting the emigration of able-bodied individuals unable to find work. Discusses implications of any imbalance between supply of and demand for labour. Considers issues related to currency, profits and corn prices. Poses questions that might be instructive to be explored about the well being of individuals after emigration. With marginal notes by Robert Torrens.
