Some items in this collection are described in the Derbyshire Record Society's "A Catalogue of Local Maps of Derbyshire c.1528–1800" (compiled by Harold Nichols, revised by Mary Wiltshire assisted by Susan Woore, published 2012). The description reads as follows:
A Map or draft of all the wasts and commons belonging to the Towne and Liberties of Castleton as it is now Divided among the Freeholders and Coppyholders of the said town and liberties of Castleton according to their Majesties writt of partition the third day of September in the third yeare of their Ma:ties Reigne and in the yeare of our Lord 1691. By us Luke Leigh, Edm: Hall, Surveyors. Surveyors: Luke Leigh, Edmund Hall. Scale: a Scale of Chaines to this Map 40 [1:6400]: divisions are numbered from right to left. Size: 35 x 58 cm., irregular. Materials: paint and ink on parchment. Centred on: SK150829 Notes: cardinal points at edges, top of sheet marked south actually SE. Rough sketch of the wastes and commons, 790 acres, surrounding Castleton, town in the centre is left blank: shown with single line boundaries: each parcel naming freeholder or copyholder with area: three furlongs south of the town are divided into lands following strip pattern: three rakes 'Daysie Rake', 'Durtlowe Rake', and 'Weetrake', drawn with double lines across the south common: many footways shown across 'North waste', invariably where they cross the boundary they are named 'yate' (drawn as ladder stiles), 'Oxlowe yate, Cawlowe yate, Wham yate, Lidyate, Hollin Cross', etc.: houses situated at perimeter of the commons sketched with roofs cross-hatched: 'Red seates' [Cameron I, 56] made prominent: the most south-west close is noted '70 acres left for digging and delveing turffes'. Centred on: SK382712 Notes: rough sketches of various properties and parcels of ground contained in a notebook, giving alphabetical list of tenants, calculations and other writings. Shows named fields with numbers and areas, including Grovesnor Wood: detailed perspective drawing of house and outbuildings, streams and trees drawn: roads labelled 'Road to Tissington' and 'Road to Ashbourne': Explanation gives details of buildings including Lime Kiln: adjacent landowners named: some later pencil additions. | Administrative History | The papers appear to have been collected by John Walker Pashley (1880-1967) as the labelling on many of the items appears to be his. JW Pashley worked in telecommunications (1911 described as a Telephone Inspector, 1939 as a skilled workman in the Engineering Department of the Post Office). His father, John, was a grocer in Chesterfield originally from Darley Dale, who had retired by the age of 48 (1891 census). |
| Custodial History | These records were deposited in April 1964, June 1964 (two deposits), April 1965, November 1966, February 1969 (two deposits), May 1969, June 1969, March 1970, June 1972 and August 1972. Some items that had strayed from the Pashley collection before deposit, were acquired in March 1984 and March 1996. |
