Administrative History | John Harpur (1645-1681), 3rd Baronet, was the eldest son of John and Susan Harpur. He was married at Swarkestone in 1674 to Anne, daughter of William Willoughby of Parham, Suffolk, by whom John Harpur had one son and one daughter. For the related marriage settlement deed, see D3155/6494. A document held by the University of Manchester shows that in 1672 William Willoughby had mortgaged property in order to raise a marriage portion - see Rylands Archive 2711. There is potential for confusion as in London in 1661 a kinsman, John Harpur of Swarkestone, married Frances Willoughby, sister of Anne Willoughby. Probate of John Harpur's will was granted in 1681 by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (held at the National Archives). A portrait survives at Calke Abbey: https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/sir-john-harpur-c-16451681-3rd-bt-169485 |
