Administrative History | John Harpur (1616-1669), 2nd Baronet, was the son of Henry and Barbara Harpur. He married Susan West, with whom he had five sons and five daughters. He was made Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1641. He is said to have supported the royalist cause during the Civil War, although historians face a difficulty in distinguishing between Sir John Harpur of Calke and his kinsman Sir John Harpur of Swarkestone, who had been Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1636. Probate of John Harpur's will was granted in 1670 by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (held at the National Archives). A memorial portrait survives at Calke Abbey: https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/memorial-portrait-of-sir-john-harpur-16161669-2nd-bt-169366 |
