Title
Medical Appeal Tribunal case file for Thomas William Stringer, aged 33, Filler at Blackwell, relating to an Industrial Accident
Date
1950
Description
Date of birth: 22/03/1917
Marital status: Married
Address: 23 Queen Street, South Normanton
Type of injury: Groin strain
Description of accident: Strained groin when pulling in tension end to tighten belt
Further information: Stringer had an accident on 5 July 1948 and suffered a hernia from groin strain. The Initial medical report states 'no operative treatment. Is on waiting list at Mansfield Hospital for operation. Is employed at present on light work (Timber Supply to Coal Face).' The provisional assessment terminated on 18 January 1949 but payment was renewed for a further 3 months. However a letter from the Ministry of National Insurance dated 14 February 1949 states 'as a result of his appeal action, payment of this latter award must be suspended until the decision of the Medical Appeal Tribunal has been received by the Insurance Officer.' According to a handwritten letter dated 8 April 1949 from the NUM Stringer had an operation on 2 February 1949 and resumed light work on 30 March 1949. He received sick pay of £2 9 6 per week for himself, wife and child. He was advised to apply for the supplementary allowance and this was granted. There is further lengthy correspondence between the NUM and the Ministry regarding the payment of benefit while Stringer was in hospital. The appeal was against the decision to award 10 per cent for life from 19 January 1949. On appeal dated 12 May 1949 this was increased to 20 per cent, but for 5 months as a provisional assessment. There is correspondence relating to other cases waiting to be heard: Frances Cunningham and George Wallis.
