| Description | Date of birth: 14/03/1909 Marital status: Married Address: 31 Cemetery Road, Danesmoor Type of injury: Injuries - chest and abdomen Description of accident: Crushed by a fall of coal Further information: Injuries included post traumatic diaphragmatic hernia which required surgery. Breathlessness had been noted in several medical reports and pneumoconiosis was queried in an X-ray report of August 1951. A report from a Consultant Chest Physician in March 1954 stated 'chronic bronchitis' that had been aggravated by the accident and by thoracotomy and a pleural effusion that had occurred. 'I do not believe there is evidence of pneumoconiosis [...] the disability will persist, and in my experience it usually gets worse over the years' recommending antibiotics, plus breathing exercises to restore 'morale and confidence'. |
