Further information: Letter to Mr Kitts dated 18 March 1950 from P Nicklin, NUM Ripley Branch, in relation to Rawson's accident: 'He was knocked down by a horse returning to the stables […] This horse was by itslef and not being led out in the correct manner. I have previously complained about this sort of risk at consultative committee.' After enquiries a second letter included: 'The man who was in charge of the horse is an absolutely reliable type.[...] He has had dealings with horses underground for practically all his life. [...] The haulage rope was started up and this casued the horse to bolt'. The witnesses names and addresses were supplied but there is no further correspondence in relation to that. Rawson retired and Nicklin wrote again 30 November 1958: 'Bill [...] had to pack in about 2 years ago. He was having trouble getting about'. Rawson's last occupation was a Conveyor Operator. Hearing 5 January 1959 adjourned for medical evidence. GP letter stated Rawson's medical problem was shortness of breath and not related to any accident as no ribs had been broken. Another medical examination revealed high Blood Pressure (220/108).
