Title
Local Appeal Tribunal case file for Fred Wilson, aged 64, Packer at Swanwick
Date
1958
Description
Date of birth:
Marital status: Married
Address: 28 Elms Avenue, Firs Estate, Alfreton
Type of benefit claimed: Special Hardship Allowance
Type of injury: Injury - knee
Further information: The accident was in 1954 after which Wilson was given a 2 per cent life disability assessment for chronic arthritis of the knee with an associated bursa which had been aggravated by the accident. An Appeal for Special Hardship Allowance was won in April 1955 at Sutton-in-Ashfield. Letter in June 1957 from claimant to Mr Kitts at NUM says: 'I am starting on my 50th year in the mines. I have been wondering if I was to retire Not that I am doing How do I stand with my accident [...] if we could get a lump sum for a little nest egg for when I do pack in [...] I have got to ask you about it as I am not very well up with this [...] I think I can Trust you and I have Faith in you [...] as I think you are the Man for me'. The reply indicated that there was no provision for a lump sum out of Special Hardship Allowance or in addition to the 2 per cent gratuity. In March 1958 the Special Hardship Allowance finished after a Medical Board expressed the opinion that the claimant was now fit for his regular occupation and Wilson wrote to the NUM office again asking for support, 'all that you have done or tried to do for me they have undone it All'. Current certificate from Wilson's own doctor stated his inability to kneel for any length of time and his unfitness for pre-accident work.
