Further information: Appeal heard and adjourned for supporting medical evidence on 14 August 1958. Notes from a telephone message say: 'The Pit manager says he is unfit for work in the pit'. Letter from Westthorpe NUM Branch Secretary asks for impact of a previous shoulder injury in 1955 to be taken into account with a comment: '(Mr Hagin had to pay the Doctor at the hospital 7/6d for the information)'. Medical board report stated claimant was able to perform all the following: write, pick up a pen, dress and undress, tie his tie, lace his shoes, put his hand behind his head/ back / to his mouth, open a door, reach up a wall to the normal height. Claimant's grounds of appeal included: 'it is necessary on this job to use signals which are 6ft high. [...] In pit work it is required for a lamp to be carrie [...] but there are not any one handed jobs. [...] P.S. I am going away for two weeks on July 17 1958 (convalesant)''. By 1 May 1958 Hagin had retired.
