Further information: From NUM handwritten notes: 'I suggest that a person's own Dr. should be in a better position to decide on the fitness or otherwise of his patient. Trapped his hand in a car door at Skegness where he had gone for convalescence'. In Askew's appeal letter: 'Thanks for the invitation to appeal to the Local Tribunal, against your decision to grant me one weeks pay. I dont appeal for money that is mine legally but deprived of by your decision, Tribunals are cut and dried affairs. [...] How nice to sit in judgement on others'. Medical certificates over a period of 4 months had covered: enteritis, post-influenzal depression, fibrositis, cystitis and rheumatism.
