Title
Local Appeal Tribunal case file for Joseph Smith, aged 33
Date
1950
Description
Date of birth:
Marital status: Married
Address: 10 North Street, Holmgate, Clay Cross
Type of benefit claimed: Unemployment
Type of injury: Not applicable
Further information: Smith attended the Local Appeal Tribunal to try and claim unemployment benefit claim, although there is no record of the tribunal's decision or if it went ahead at all. Smith had been employed at Glapwell Colliery for 12 years until July 1948, and at Morton Colliery for ony two days in December 1949. Explaining their reluctance to employ Smith, the National Coal Board in Bolsover wrote in a letter to the tribunal that 'the man has shown complete indifference to his work, and his record of attendance is poor.' It went on to say that 'Owing to the developments which are taking place [...] we are not able to push the claims of such a case, to the detriment of other men who, we anticipate, will be redundant'. Smith claimed he had made an appointment to see the Training Officer at Parkhouse Colliery [...] to try and fix myself up with a position in the Mining Industry in which I worked for 18 years or more since leaving school'.
