Description
Three unsigned letters dated 9 October 1950 concerning the principle of claiming benefit following a mining disaster. Two original letters - dated 29 September 1950 and 4 October 1950 respectively - enquiring about compensation for dependents are attached. (Not available for consultation)
This file includes a report, published by HMSO in 1952, presented by the Minister of Fuel and Power to Parliament in June 1952 on the causes of, and the circumstances attending, the accident at Creswell Colliery on 26 September 1950. It also includes a copy of the Daily Graphic & Sketch, dated 27 September 1950, and The Derbyshire Times, dated 29 September 1950, both of which contain reports on the disaster at Creswell.

Administrative History
On 26 September 1950 a fire at Creswell Colliery, which started at a transfer point of the trunk belt conveyor system in the South-Western Main Intake Haulage Road in the High Hazel seam, killed 80 people.
