HistoryThe Chesterfield and District Trades Union Council was established on 9 June 1893. Following the General Strike in 1926 it went into a decline but was revitalised in 1937. In the 1930s and 1940s it extended its boundaries to include Clay Cross and Staveley Trades Councils. ¶ ¶One of the aims of the organisation (as stated in the May Day Gala Programme 1988) is to "promote the interests of all its affiliated organisations and to secure united action on all questions affecting or likely to affect those interests and to take part in national and international efforts to promote the welfare of the workers".
