BiographyBessey was an enslaved African on the Turners Hall sugar plantation in Barbados, who first appears in the records on 31 December 1759 as a child. In 1771 she was recorded as working in the meat gang. The meat gang weeded the fields and cared for the animals, and was made up of the very young and very old.
