Biography | Tom was enslaved on the Turners Hall sugar plantation in Barbados and first appears in the records on 31 December 1759 as a child. He was the son of Great Bessy and younger brother of Mingo. In 1771 he was recorded as apprenticed to Napoleon, the carpenter. In 1780 he was listed as a carpenter. A 'mulatto' was a person of mixed African and European descent. Where the mother was an enslaved African, the father was likely an enslaver or someone employed by the plantation. |
