DescriptionThere is a list of the items originally in the guard book; a few others were added and one or two removed, before it was deposited at Sheffield Libraries. The volume now contains the following original documents:-
1. Measurements for the proposed Chesterfield-Bawtry Canal.
2. Contract for cylinder and piston for Millclose mine. 15th May, 1759 (2 items).
3. A section of Basrobin mine. 1767. Scale: 20yds. To 1 inch. Size: 91.5'' x 12".
4. Wigley Doghole mine. Notes of ore raised and profits, 1765
5. Printed Act of Parliament to empower John Wall to execute articles for driving a sough through the Cowley estate in the parishes of Darley and Youlgreave, now vested in Anna Maria Wall, an infant. [1752]
6. Bond. Charles Wharton of Ashover (Derbyshire), mason, bound in £100 to Joseph Whitfield of the same, agent for the Governor and Company for smelting down lead with pit coal and seacoal, not to build or reveal the methods of building furnaces similar to that he has undertaken to build according to the instructions of Whitfield, during twenty years following 17th September 1737.
7. Receipts. John Wall, Henry Thornhill and Nicholas Twigg to the Governor and Company, for purchase money of certain parts of mines in Wens ley in Wirkswirth Wapentake called Millclose Mines. December- January, 1742/1743. (7a)- Release of above purchasers from all fines and forfeitures falling on said mines. Signed Stephen Bagshaw (head barmaster). 1742
8. Assignment. John Gilbert Cooper of Lockar (Derbyshire), to Nicholas Silvester of Eardington [Erdington] near Birmingham, gentleman. All mines discovered or hereafter to be discovered in the Liberty of Birchover and all the lead ore therein, and all that part of Yate Stoop Mine in the land of said Cooper; for forty-one years for one twelfth share of all lead ore raised. 27th January 1745/1746
9. Memoranda of Span· Rake freeings. 1749-1765
10. Appointment by Joseph Whitfield of Bowers Mill in Ashover (and others) of Isaac Brown of Ash over to be their legal representative for the settlement of all accounts connected with the sale of wood and timber, recently purchased by Whitfield and his associates for sale in small quantities. 31st August 1753.
11. Bond. George Goodwin of Monyash and John Wheeldon of Crougston, bound to Joseph Whitfield of Ashover in £815. 10s. 10d. to repay certain sums and keep covenants of a deed relating probably to the timber mentioned in previous document. 27th April, 1754.
12. A plan of Millclose Works in Cowley Knowle. January 18th, 1758. Endorsed: Millclose to unwater. John Whitfields Scheme, 1758. Scale 50 yards to I inch. Size 18.5'' x 21.5''.
13. Copy of an agreement amongst Spar Rake partners. 15th February 1769. Also account of money deposited in Joseph Whitfield's hand.
14. Memorandum of sale to the Governors and Company of mines called Girdall, Mil[k]ing Spot and Davies. 10th March 1766
15 & 17. Conveyance (Lease and release). Ann, Countess of Massareene to the Governors and Company and John Wall the elder of Wensley and John Twigg of Holme on behalf of the proprietors of Cowley Sough. A small parcel of land being part of a close called Walkers Close in Birchover; for £21. 15th, 16th November, 1771.
16. Letters from James Gunthorp of Bawtry to Mr. Whitfield giving details of goods sent from and brought to Bawtry up and down the River Idle. 1767- 1768. July 30th, 1769.
18. Questionnaire re: Doghole vein. February 23rd, 1774.
19. Joseph Whitfield's copies of his letters concerning Windmill mine negotiations. 1775.
20. Estimate for sinking the Engine Shaft at Windmill Mine by George Barker & Co. 1776.
21. Mr. Brindley's estimate for completing the Canal from Chesterfield to Stockworth [Stockwith] (No date)
22. Printed notice of Letting of power to drive a sough in Cromford with certain grounds and veins of lead, at the house of Mr. William Lovatt at New Bath, Matlock on Friday. 24th July [c.1800 ? 1801]
23. Plan of shaft (unidentified). Scale: 10 fathoms to 1 inch.
24. Windmill Level. Plan of title. Also shows adjoining veins. 1774. Scale: 60 yards to 1 inch. Size: 9.5' x 13"
25. A sketch of Watering Close, Bithoms, and Gurdal Soughs by William Smith (No date). Size 15.5” x 18”
26. (Stored with MD maps) "A plan of Cowley Sough for the unwatering the lead mine called Yale Stoop in the lordships of Winster and Birchover. .. and many other mines in that neighbourhood" by Thomas Southern. 26th September, 1761. Scale: ?200 yards to 1 inch. Size 24" x 25". Details of veins and soughs, names of owners of fields given on map. Elton and Winster Churches, and Millclose Fire engine shown in perspective.
