Archive Reference / Library Class No.
D5891/1/2
Title
General Investigations Book
Date
c1940s-1950s
Description
Marked "General Investigations" on spine in c1980s plastic lettering (Dymo style). Inside cover gives the original title as Practical Book and notes the name and address "J Markland, 16 Marcus Street, Derby". This was the home address of Joseph Markland, who worked alongside the County and Borough Analyst R W Sutton, and later became County Analyst. This personal touch suggests the book was originally Markland's own property, or was a semi-official record kept in private custody. It is not certain that this volume forms part of the same series as D5891/1/3-13.
This volume contains the procedural description of scientific testing and results, giving occasional cross-references to Derby Borough records (e.g. "Trade Wastes book"). The County and the Borough services were headed by the same Analyst at this time, so there may be some overlap of content.
