Description
This collection of personal papers is principally made up of family letters from George's aunts, siblings and cousins dating back to before his move to Derbyshire. The Butt family was connected by marriage with the Cameron, Congreve, Singleton and Winder families. The collection also includes two later items associated with the Revd Harvey E Taverner, husband of Miss Mabel Sherwood Butt.

Revd George Butt of Chesterfield (c1816-1888), Anglican vicar
Administrative History
Revd George Butt was born c1816 and educated at Christ Church, Oxford. He was ordained as a deacon in 1838 and as a priest the following year. Soon afterwards he visited New Zealand with his wife, possibly as a minister. In 1851 he was appointed as Vicar of Chesterfield, a position he retained until his death in 1888.

The papers were donated to Derbyshire Record Office by a private individual in November 2001.
