Administrative History
The Whittington Free Grammar School was established under the will of Peter Webster who died in 1678. A new school was built in 1848 with several extensions added later. It passed to Chesterfield Borough Council as the local education authority in 1903. A new lnfants School was opened in 1912. In 1931 and 1932 a new primary and a reconstituted secondary school were opened, both named after Mary Swanwick whose family had been closely connected with the school. The school later became a primary school only.

This item was donated to Derbyshire Record Office by a private individual in April 1999. Added to the catalogue as part of the FindersKeepers project by volunteer NGS.
