DescriptionContaining copies of letters written by “W R” from Wakefield [probably William Rooth, a connection of the Rooth family of Stretton, and an official of the Aire and Calder Navigation]

There is reference to a brother John Rooth of Chesterfield in 1810 (page 53) and reference to Tomlinson and Rooth of Hull. “W R” appears to have been involved in merchant shipping, both in the internal and coastal trades. There is much material on the canals; references to shipbuilding, the buying of ships, routes, goods carried; frequent mention of financial matters; sometimes more personal matters including experience abroad. On page 160 is a summary of the writer’s affairs, mentioning income at Chesterfield and Woolley Moor, shares in navigations, shops and a Manchester warehouse. Sheffield rents, income from colliery at Wednesbury, Staffs etc. Correspondents are usually in the North, but also in London.

Enclosures: D2262/B/1/2: Copy of letter from Samuel Lloyd, Birmingham to John Rooth, Brown Hill [? co. Warwick], informing Rooth that the dispute with the Canal company has been settled, with reference to a sough and an engine to drain mines. Says Lloyd has been sinking all summer to reach the coal, then the water broke the engine; description of strata etc, n.d. [early 19th cent]. /B/1/3; Paper endorsed Wakefield 29 November 1839. Division of payments made by Brickley Kershaw & Co from 1811 to 1827 and also general summary from 1811 to 1839; the first 3 pages are headed respectively sums paid for repairs E B & Co 1811 to 1827 charged to J & W Rooth’s rent account, sums paid for taxes, insurance and valuing premises 1811 to 1827 and charged to rent account, and sums paid 1811 to 1827 for new erections, machine and gearing (exclusive of new offices in 1825). The pages include columns of numbers and sums of money. On the back page is a summary of monies paid under similar and other headings to above, with totals 1811 and 1827 and 1828 to 1839. 1811-1839
