Archive CreatorChemist and druggist businesses at Market Place, Cromford
Administrative HistoryThe first known owner of the premises was Richard Clay, who was recorded as a druggist in the census of 1841 and in various trade directories for that decade. He ran the business until his death in 1884, with the Kelly's Directory of 1887 showing the premises to have been taken over by another druggist, Thomas Nicklinson (previously of Sadlergate, Derby).
By 1916 ownership had transferred to Frank Slawson (for whom there are no records in this collection), who between 1925 and 1928 moved his chemist business to North Parade, Matlock Bath, and was replaced at Cromford by the firm of GH & AE Marsden. This continued until April 1950 when one RS Carter was recorded as having taken over as proprietor.
Custodial HistoryThese records were donated to the Record Office by a private individual in December 2011.
