Biography | Jim was an enslaved African on the Turners Hall sugar plantation in Barbados, who first appears in the records on 31 December 1759 as a child. Jim does not appear on the 1771 list but James does, so it has been assumed that they are the same person. James was recorded as a boy in the second gang. The second gang laboured in the fields, but was not worked as hard as the great gang. It would have been made up of younger teenagers, pregnant women, and people who were no longer able to work in the great gang, perhaps aged from around 28 to 50. |
