Title
Copy of a grant by the Earl of Devonshire to John Beresford, gentleman of Hartle Hall, p. Bakewell and William Whitby, junior and younger son and heir apparent of William Whitby, senior of Coven, co Staffs in trust for the use of Richard Whitby of Ashford, second son of William Whitby, senior and his wife Margaret and their heirs and Richard Johnson, yeoman of Ashford. Recites that Richard Johnson labourer, formerly of Isleworth, Middlesex was convicted of the murder of William Patsull and later pardoned. He held two copyhold messuages and several closes in Ashford (location described) which are forfeited and for which Richard and Margaret Whitby (Margaret being Johnson's only sister) pay a consideration of £160 and an annual rent of 20s on condition that they pay for the maintenance of Johnson who owed debts totalling £120. 28 Jun 1687
