A 'mulatto' was a person of mixed African and European descent; his mother was an enslaved African, and his father was probably an enslaver. He was the son of Great Bessy and younger brother of Mingo. In 1771 he was recorded as apprenticed to Napoleon, the carpenter, and in 1780 he was listed as a carpenter.
